Ljubljana in Focus: Exploring Slovenia’s Storybook Capital

By Eddie Johnson on December 9, 2025

Ljubljana is one of those cities that immediately captures your heart. It’s small, it’s charming, and it feels like it was designed for slow, happy wandering. The moment you step into the Old Town, you’re surrounded by pastel buildings, leafy riverbanks, and that easygoing Slovenian vibe that makes everything feel a little lighter.

Start with a stroll along the Ljubljanica River. It’s the heart of the city, lined with cafés where locals linger over coffee like they have all the time in the world. Cross the iconic Triple Bridge, pop into the Central Market for a taste of local life, and don’t miss the Dragon Bridge— Ljubljana’s unofficial mascot.

Of course, exploring Ljubljana Castle is a must for visitors. Whether you hike up or take the funicular, the views over the terracotta rooftops are worth the trip alone. Up there, the city really does feel like something out of a storybook—compact, colorful, and wrapped in greenery.

What makes Ljubljana so special is the blend of beauty and ease. It’s the kind of place where every corner invites you to slow down, sip something, and enjoy the moment. And honestly? That might be its greatest charm.

The Best of Slovenia: Why Lake Bled Should Be on Your Bucket List

Nestled in the heart of the Julian Alps, Lake Bled is Slovenia’s most iconic destination—and it’s easy to see why. With its emerald-green waters, a charming island crowned by a historic church, and a medieval castle perched high above, Lake Bled feels like something straight out of a fairytale. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a taste of Slovenian culture, this alpine gem has it all.

Things to Do Around Lake Bled

  • Bled Castle – Towering over the lake, Bled Castle is one of the oldest in Slovenia. Inside, you’ll find museums, wine tasting, a medieval printing workshop, and one of the best viewpoints anywhere around the lake. Go early in the morning or at golden hour for spectacular photos.

  • Bled Island & Church of the Assumption – Hop on a traditional pletna boat or rent a rowboat and make your way to Slovenia’s most photographed island. Climb the 99 stone steps to the Church of the Assumption and give the wishing bell a ring—it’s said to bring good luck. Even if you’re not the superstitious type, the views are worth the effort.

  • Water Activities – Rent a SUP, kayak, or rowboat and enjoy some of the calmest waters in the region. Paddling all the way to the island gives you a totally different perspective and is one of the most peaceful ways to experience the lake.

  • Walk (or Bike) the Full Loop Around the Lake – The 6 km (3.7 mile) loop is one of the easiest and most beautiful walks you’ll do anywhere in Europe. Every few minutes you’ll want to stop for a photo. If you want something quicker and breezier, rent a bike and cruise around.

  • Relax at a Lakeside Café - Part of the magic of Lake Bled is simply slowing down. Find a café along the water, order a coffee or a glass of Slovenian wine, and enjoy the view. You can't leave Bled without trying the town’s signature cream cake dessert—a light, flaky pastry layered with custard and whipped cream.
